Random 10 things

There is not a Wedneaday Hodgepodge today to I thought I'd post a list of random things!

1.  It rained most all day yesterday. It was a nice, gentle rain. We are grateful to have it. The local cities have recently started stage 2 water restrictions which is limiting when you can water your lawn to every other week.

2. I like the new sounds made on the new download of Words with Friends.

3. Our church had ladies night out last night. We are going to start doing this once a month. We've done it off and on in the past, and now are trying to make it a monthly thing.

4.  I get mixed reactions when I tell people we aren't finding out our baby's gender. Some clearly think we are crazy and tell me they could never do that. Others think it is so neat that we are waiting in a world were it's so common now to find out.

5.  My boy is working on a ham radio presentation for his science class. He asked his teacher at the beginning of the year if he could talk about it, and now the time has come. He made a PowerPoint and is going to talk on the radio to his Dad in his demonstration.

6. I bought a small block of cheese last night at the grocery store, and my husband's reaction was so funny. I never buy a block, I always buy shredded. I told him it sounded good and sometimes lately I feel like I'd just like to cut off a chunk of cheese. I guess this is pregnancy related!

7. Today is my aunt's birthday. I have fun memories of her from my growing up years....like getting a Big Foot Pizza from Pizza Hut when I spent the night with her and playing the board game Life at her house. I didn't have that game so it was a treat to play it at her house! She dropped me off at school each morning for several years, and it was always fun when she'd come to drop off my cousin with my Mom and bring us croissants that were on sale at Burger King.  There are many other memories, but those came to mind!

8.  I was pleased to see so many voting yesterday. I saw a lot on FB that said they voted. When I went to vote there was a line and more steadily coming.

9.  Yesterday I watched some 5th graders do a presentation on the colonies. Each group was assigned a colony to research and make a poster telling about the geography, industry, etc. of that area. I was reminded we haven't always had the privilege to vote. One of the groups said in their colony you can vote if you own land and another said you can vote if you are a man.

10.  My boy had his first Dr. Pepper last week.

Random

Has it really been since Friday that I last blogged?  I thought I'd share some random things with you that have happened recently.

~ We were thankful my husband had a job to go to this week after all the talk of the government shutdown at the end of last week.

~ Our garden is starting to grow.  We've seen some of the plants getting bigger.  I had Caleb take pictures to watch the progress.  He was excited to see his corn getting taller.

~ We bought a new lawn mower on Saturday.  Caleb was excited to get to push it and mow.  Daddy said it was hard to believe our boy is big enough to do that.

~ We are looking for a new bed.  We can tell ours is getting old and isn't as comfortable anymore.

~ It rained Sunday night.  As Caleb was going to sleep he heard a rumble of thunder.  He told me "God heard my prayers" cause he'd just prayed for rain at bedtime.  I took a picture for him to show him the rain

~ We are having fun watching Caleb in tball.  They do it different here in that the coach pitches the ball and if after 5 balls the child doesn't hit it, he gets to use the tee to hit it.  I think some of these little ones just don't have the motor skills to hit a ball thrown to them yet.  But I have seen progress made by them at practice.  Caleb thinks it is grand to be able to hit the ball thrown by the coach into outfield.  Very exciting!  He has a game Thursday and Saturday and a make-up game next Monday.

~ I am listening to Beth Moore's So Long, Insecurity which I've read already.  She reads it herself, I'm enjoying it.

~ I am going on a field trip with first graders on Friday!

Have a day of blessings!

questions

I was tagged by Linda to answer the seven questions she gave me. Then I am to come up with seven questions and tag seven people to answer those questions.

These are Linda's questions for me:
1. Do you prefer to read the book or see the movie?
Read the book

2. What is your favorite holiday and why?
Christmas. I love the specialness of the season in the fact that we remember Christ's birth (even though we know He wasn't really born Dec. 25). I love the decorations, family traditions, buying and wrapping gifts, and all the special food.

3. Which do you like better - the mountains or the beach?
Hard choice, I haven't been to either very much. I like looking at the mountains and hearing the sounds of the beach.

4. If money were no consideration, what vehicle would you drive?
I'm not really picky about my vehicle. I liked sitting in the Acadia at the State Fair Auto Show a couple years ago. There was one I liked this year, but I don't know what kind it was. My husband probably would know though!

5. What is your favorite cold-weather beverage?
Hot cocoa with marshmallows

6. How do you communicate most often with your friends: phone, email, text, face-to-face?
Mostly email now or through Facebook. My phone doesn't have texting on it but my husband's does so I've used that lately and like it.

7. How do you receive your mail? Mailbox on the porch, at the end of the driveway, down the street, or post office box?
Since we are in a duplex, we have our mailbox on a post with three other mailboxes out near the street in front of the duplex.

Here are the seven questions I am asking.
1. Do you exercise regularly? If so what kind of exercise do you do?
2. What is your favorite fast food restaurant?
3. Do you use plastic, paper, or reusable/recyclable bags?
4. What is the best book you've ever read?
5. What is your favorite drink?
6. What's a website you go to every day?
7. Do you have a favorite charity? What is it and why do you support them?

Now I am tagging the following people:

Thinking about fears....

I received this email recently. I'd never read it before I don't think. I thought it had a lot of truth in it and wanted to share it. I do not know the author. I looked it up online and didn't find out either. Does this sum up any of your fears?

MY FEARS

I feared being alone...until I learned to like
myself.

I feared people's opinions...until I learned
that people would have opinions about me anyway.

I feared failure.....until I realized that
they are only the stepping stones to success.

I feared rejection ....until I learned
to have faith in myself.

I feared pain...until I learned
that it is necessary for growth.

I feared the truth....until I saw the ugliness
in lies.

I feared life...until I experienced
that it depends solely on my attitude.

I feared death....until I realized
that it is only a beginning.

I feared hate...until I saw
that it was nothing more than ignorance.

I feared love....until I realized that
I do need the other person to love me back.

I feared ridicule....until I learned
how to laugh at myself.

I feared success ... until I learned
that it is okay to be the best I can.

I feared growing old....until I realized
that I gained the beauty of wisdom every day.

I feared the dark...until I saw
the beauty of the stars and moonlight.

I feared the past....until I realized
that it can only hurt me if I allow it to do so.

I feared the future....until I realized
that it is only this moment that matters.

I feared change.....until I saw
that even the most beautiful butterfly had
to undergo a metamorphosis before it could fly.

As long as it is called Today: Random

Welcome to "As long as it is called Today" as we encourage one another. I hope you will join me each week on Tuesdays as we encourage each other in our daily lives as Christians, spouses, parents, and home keepers.

Here is a link to last week's post.

Since today is the fifth Tuesday of the month we'll have a special question (not related to the themes of the other four Tuesdays).

This week's question: Share something special you do in the fall or a special fall memory.

My answer: I love seeing the fall decorations on porches and businesses. One tradition I like is to pick a pumpkin each year. It sits on the porch and then we have fun carving it together.

Last week I received a call for a poll being done by CBS News and the New York Times. The questions were about the current economy, politics, etc. Here is information about the poll and you can view the poll results if you're interested. The first one linked with the February 23rd date is the one I answered. I remembered that the results were reported on Monday so I did a little searching and found them.

Just wanted to share!!

Show appreciation!

During this busy time of year, let's not forget to remember and show appreciation to some of the important people in our lives that sometimes are overlooked. I received the following email from a lady named Melissa who is in one of my online groups. I asked her if I could share it. I thought this served as a good reminder and wanted to share it with you...

-----------
As some of you know, I am a church secretary for a Lutheran church. On
behalf of YOUR church's secretary, I'd like to ask you to remember her/him
this Christmas and next year.

A lot of people think Church Secretaries answer phones and type bulletins,
and don't really realize the extent of our jobs. Here is just an idea of
what we deal with on an almost daily basis...

1. Answering phones
2. Typing bulletins
3. Preparing newsletters
4. Preparing worship slides
5. Preparing announcement sheets
6. Running interference between staff members (and trying to keep the lines
of communication open while often being "left out of the loop")
7. Handling calls from people needing financial assistance. Whether they be
phone calls or "walk-ins." Most of the time we do not have any authority to
distribute aid to these people. While we do our best to be Christ-like,
there are times, especially when we are alone--and many Church secretaries
are alone most of the time--that some of these people can be down-right
scary and we end up in a potentially dangerous position.
8. Ordering supplies
9. Many secretaries also help with some aspect of the financial record
keeping (in my case, I record offering contributions) .
10. Typing minutes of meetings and preparing reports
11. Scheduling building use
12. Arranging for advertising of events
13. Duplicating sermon tapes
14. Unjamming the copier
15. and the list goes on....

These are just the tip of the iceberg. Whether a small church or a large
one (the one I work for has an average worship attendance of 400 on Sunday
mornings), YOUR church secretary does a lot more than you may realize.

I know Christmas is just a couple days away, but please remember YOUR
church secretary this year with at least a note of appreciation and thanks
for all that she/he does. Administrative Professionals Day (formerly
"Secretary's Day") is the last full week of April. While many of us see our
positions as a ministry, we are still human and still have a need to feel
appreciated. Even a simple card of "thanks for all you do" can be a HUGE
morale booster!
---------------
It is close to Christmas this year, but it's never the wrong time to say thank you to someone! Who are some others that make our lives much easier besides church secretaries that we often forget? Garbage collectors, secretary at child's school, mailman, newspaper delivery person.....

Tagged

I was tagged by Debra last week and am just now getting to it! So here are my seven random facts:
1. I like to read while soaking in a hot bath.
2. As a child, I would get a pen or pencil as a souvenir from our trips. I ended up with some really neat ones. Now I don't have so many neat pens but I still have a lot. I have a pen bag with multi-colored pens I use when writing notes.
3. Now I like to get magnets and postcards as a souvenir when we go on trips.
4. I was in a postcard exchange last year with fellow members of an online group. We got postcards from all over. We put them in a photo album. Caleb likes to look at them.
5. I was involved with 4-H as a girl. I enjoyed participating in the annual Youth Fair each January as well as the county food shows.
6. I like to dip my fried okra in Italian dressing.
7. When I was little we lived in the country. My Dad would ask me to go pick up anything I found in our drive way, like old bottle caps, screws, nails, bolts, and when I filled a bucket he'd give me $5.00. I don't know if I ever filled up the bucket! Our drive way was long and had a circle turn around area.
I have seen a bunch of people with this tag recently so if you haven't done it and want to, consider yourself tagged!! It was kinda hard for me to think of random things this morning!

Hershey Kisses

Do you like Hershey Kisses? I do!

I like how they are wrapped and each one has a little flag sticking out of the top.

My cousin and I dressed up as Hershey Kisses one year for Halloween. My Mom made the costumes for us. I was in junior high I believe and she was probably 2 or 3. I think that was my favorite costume ever.

I've noticed recently how many varieties of Kisses there are to buy. I remember eating them when I was little and thinking how neat it was when they came out with Hershey's with almonds. Now they have all sorts....plain, with almonds, white chocolate hugs, dark chocolate, and the list goes on. You can see a list at the website.

We went to a get-together recently for my husband's grandmother. They passed out small favor boxes full of Kisses. They had a variety in each box. There was a new kind I'd never seen. The wrapper was blue with little silver speckles on it and the flag said Cookie. It was white chocolate (like a Hug) with small bits of cookie inside. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not! I tried several. I think I expected it to be a smooth taste of white chocolate and then as I bit down it had the little bits of cookie. I looked on the website but couldn't find it in the listing so maybe it is a special limited edition or something.

So do you like Hershey Kisses? What is your favorite kind? Is there a kind you don't like? Do you have any memories about Kisses?

Tagged!

It’s a random tag, and here are the rules!
1. Link to the person who ‘tagged’ you!
2. Post the rules on your blog!
3. List 6 random facts about yourself!
4. Tag 6 people at the end of your post!
5. Let each person know they have been tagged by commenting on their blog!
6. Let the tagger know the entry is posted on your blog!

Pamela tagged me for this one.

Six random facts about me:

1. My thumb goes way back, almost flat (like when I'm giving "thumbs up" sign). My Dad's is like this also and so is Caleb's.

2. I love to lay on the floor and color. It relaxes me!

3. I am allergic to the apple cinnamon scent. My eyes do weird things when I smell it. One time when I was teaching second grade we were making apple sauce in the classroom, and my eyes were going crazy and giving me a headache. I finally put all the instances of this happening together and realized the cause!

4. I have the same middle name as my Mom and Meemaw.

5. I like to clip coupons! Last Sunday I saw Glade scented oil candles on sale at Walgreens. I had already seen them listed in their August rebate book too. Plus I knew I had a coupon for the same product. The candle was $5.79 originally and on sale for $4.99 then a $2.00 rebate. My coupon was for $4.00 off! I did the rebate thing earlier this summer and they know have it so you can submit online so I don't have to "waste" a stamp now either to do it! Plus you get 10% back if you put it on a Walgreens gift card. (I sound like a Walgreens commercial, sorry back to the point of the blog!)

My random thinking

I thought of something interesting tonight, it struck me as a funny thing. We've been careful not to give Caleb guns or weapons. He doesn't have any water guns, swords, etc. This is something we decided and so far it has worked for us. With his Daddy being a hunter I know he will eventually know all about guns. I'm also confident that he'll have his Daddy to teach him hunter's safety one day. But for now we don't have guns. He has come up with things on his own, which I've heard from other Mom's of boys is normal! He pretends he has his own pocket knife and talks about the day when he's bigger and he'll get a REAL pocket knife.

Tonight we took him to a "family entertainment" place which has a buffet and various games to win tickets for prizes. He chose a whistle and then I pointed out the snakes. It is one of those plastic bendy snakes with sticker dots on each section. I didn't know if he'd want that or not but he said yes. When we were in the car driving home, he was saying how he liked snakes and he would touch them if he saw one and how he did touch one before (he reached down and put his finger on a little garden snake of some sort in our driveway one night). We told them how they're dangerous and have sharp teeth. I thought how anytime we see a picture of a snake we'll tell him we never touch them and come tell us. Then we let him get a plastic one to play with. I had not really compared this with our gun rule but tonight thought it was similar. I found it interesting also that by the time we were home Caleb wasn't sure he wanted the snake and didn't want to play with it anymore. I guess he was listening to what we were saying about their dangers and decided he didn't like them much.

I'm not sure exactly what the point of this post is. It was just something I was thinking about tonight.

Think about this....

I read this in an email today. I wanted to share it here. I hope you enjoy it as I did.

VERY POWERFUL!

A blind girl hated herself because she was blind.
She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend.

He was always there for her. She told her
boyfriend, 'If I could only see the world, I would
marry you.'

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her.
When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything,
including her boyfriend. He asked her, 'Now that you can
see the world, will you marry me?'

The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he
was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She
hadn't expected that. The thought of looking at them the
rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left her in tears and days later
wrote a note to her saying: 'Take good care of your
eyes, my dear, because before they were yours, they were
mine. '

This is how the human brain often works when our
'status changes'. Only a very few remember what
life was like before, and who was always by their side in
the most painful situations.

Life Is a Gift!

Today before you say an unkind word -Think of
someone who can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food
- Think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife -
Think of someone who's crying out to God for a
companion.

Today before you complain about life -Think of
someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children -Think of
someone who desires children but they're barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house someone
didn't clean or sweep -
Think of the people who are living in the
streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive
-Think of someone who walks the same distance with their
feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your
job -Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who
wish they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or
condemning another -Remember that not one of us is without
error and we all answer to the Divine. And when depressing
thoughts seem to get you down - Put a smile on your face
and Thank the Divine you're alive and still around.

Yummy!

I had a coupon last week for these Pillsbury bread sticks. When I got to the store they were also marked down to 99 cents. As I was putting away the groceries, I dropped one by accident and the end busted so I went ahead and cooked that can. They smelled scrumptious! We had the other can tonight. You should try them if you have not yet. They are perfect with pasta.
