SSMT #6

I realized I have not posted my other verses I'm learning this year with the SSMT. I did verse #1 and haven't posted the others here.

Here is my new verse, it is #6.

"Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you."  Psalm 116:7

SSMT 2017 Verse #1

In the past I have done the scripture memory challenge on the Beth Moore blog.  I decided to do that again this year.  I'll post my verses on my blog.

This is the first verse I've chosen...

"But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons."  Galatians 4:4,5

You can check out her post here and join in with memorizing God's Word in 2017.

Happy New Year!

SSMT #20

Here is my new verse.  It is 2 Corinthians 8:7--

"But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us--see that you also excel in this grace of giving."

I read this on a Facebook post one day and then the next week it was part of our Sunday morning sermon on stewardship.

SSMT #18

"And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him."  I John 4:16

This is my new verse.  As I type it and read it I am thinking how do I "live in love" in my daily life.  Something to think about.

SSMT #13

My new verse is Romans 4:25--

"He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification."

I was reading a passage in Romans about righteousness and this verse really stood out to me.

SSMT #12

"Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs."  Jonah 2:8

How many times have I read the book of Jonah and never paid attention to this verse?  I recently read the book The Fitting Room and the author pointed out this verse to me.  I have been thinking about it and rereading it since then.

In the passage Jonah is praying to God from inside the fish.  Jonah makes such a good point and I think it's worth thinking about today.

When we cling to idols in our lives, we are not open to accept the grace or love of Christ. Are you clinging to any idols that are keeping you from experiencing the grace of God?

SSMT #11

Here is the new verse I've chosesn to focus on during the next two weeks:

"Watch out!  Be on your guard agasint all kinds of greed;  a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."  Luke 12:15

Seeing all the pictures lately of all the devastation around the United States has been a reminder that possessions don't matter.  This is a value we try to instill in our son too.  I can see in him that sometimes it's hard for him to be generous when it's time to go through and get rid of stuff.  Some things it's easier to cling to than get rid of.

During our move we got rid of a lot of stuff.  It felt great to take all those boxes out of the house and not stuff the items somewhere in our new house.  But I look around and there is always something more.  I ask myself do I really need this?  Could someone else use this more than I do?

I think this verse is a great reminder that we do need to be on guard against letting greed take root in our hearts.

SSMT #9

My new verse for SSMT is -- "Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness." Colossians 2:7, NLT

I read this a few days ago on Karen's blog Lily Valley and I''ve been thinking about it ever since!  As I was watering our garden this week I had to kneel down close to the plants.  The winds were blowing so strongly I didn't want the water to get blown away.  As I watched the plants they were pulled to the side, down to the ground, by the strong winds.  I thought to myself I'm glad that the plants have strong roots to hold them in the ground.

We need to have strong roots too. We need to make sure we are rooted in truth and when we are we will overflow with thankfulness.

Thank you for visiting from Spiritual Sundays today.

"Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness."  James 3:18

This verse got me thinking about sowing and our garden.  We expect certain things to grow based on the seeds we have planted.

What things are you sowing your home?  Are they the things that will bring about a harvest of righteousness?

SSMT #7

"He who answers before listening---that is his folly and shame." Proverbs 18:13

When I come across a verse I want to use for SSMT, I add it to my list. This is one I found a while back and thought it was a good one. I have seen this happen in my own life, and I'm sure you have as well.

Sometimes with my son I will start giving him an instruction, but he only hears the first few words and gets upset. For example, if I say "You can't watch your movie until you put up this game." He only hears "you can't watch your movie" and then he gets upset. He didn't listen to the whole instruction. I wasn't saying he couldn't watch his movie, but that was all he heard and he starts asking why he can't watch a movie, etc. I know I've done this with my husband too when he's talking and I will interrupt in the middle without letting him complete the thought. Interrupting and not listening only causes trouble. We need to give the people in our lives respect to hear what they are saying before we add our own two cents, which may not even be applicable to the situation if he wait and listen! I think this is another great reminder for us to listen to what the people in our lives are saying.

SSMT #5

For my next verse I have chosen one from Proverbs. I came across this verse recently and felt it was a good one to think about and memorize.

“Careless words stab like a sword, but wise words bring healing.” Proverbs 12:18, NLT

Have you ever said something and as soon as the words left your lips, you wished you could take it back? I imagine we all have at some point. It is important to think before we speak. Who wants to be labeled as careless? That is not an attractive label, and it’s certainly not the kind of words we should use. When we take a moment to pause and think though, our words will be much wiser. Those kind of words can bring peace, comfort, and healing to situations.

"And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him." Romans 12:1, NLT
