My thoughts:

We have really enjoyed the Indescribable kids series as a bedtime book.  I was excited to see this activity book to go along with this series.  

I really like the variety of this activity book.  There is such a good mix of puzzles in here that all kids will be able to find something of interest.  Activities include experiments, writing prompts, coloring pages,  drawing, word games, logic puzzles, mazes, and so much more.  Your child will learn some amazing facts about our world too as they do these activities. Another helpful thing in this book is the index to help you find both activity type and subject.  

I recommend this book for the child in your life. It is appropriate for elementary aged boys and girls and is recommended for ages 6-10.  It would also make a fun Easter basket gift this year!

Our Jesse "tree"

I've read about the Jesse tree on other blogs during past Christmas seasons.  It was something I wanted us to do as a family and remembered in time this year to prepare. 
The Jesse tree is a way to count down the days until Christmas by showing the lineage of Jesus.  It is based on the verse Isaiah 11:1: "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots."  Each day in December through Christmas you put on a new ornament that symbolizes a part of Christ's genealogy. 

There are many different ways to make one.  You can do a search for Jesse tree and find plenty of ideas and options.  Another search I did was "free printable Jesse tree ornaments."  Find something that works for you and your family to make it the most meaningful. It can be an actual tree or others I've read about make it into a calendar where you flip over one card each day. 

Ann Voskamp has a free Jesse tree devotional book that is helpful.  It has the verses, pictures and a devotional thought for each day.   

This is what we did. First I found some free printable ornaments.  This is the link for the ones I printed.  Next I colored each one, wrote the number of the day on the corner of each, cut them out, and glued them to red and green scrapbooking paper before laminating them. 

Each day we cut out a new square. We review the previous symbols and talk about how they are all linked and add the new symbol for the day. 

We couldn't decide how to display our ornaments.  I noticed this long section of our wall that was just the right width for our ornaments so we hang them there on a ribbon each  night. 

We have all enjoyed doing this and have learned from it as well.  It has been a great way to count down the days until Christmas because we are reminded of Christ.  He had a plan for us and all the pieces fit together in that plan through the years from Creation until His birth. 

I would also say don't make this "one more thing" to add to your list of things to do during the Christmas season.  It is a great way to get your focus on Christ in my opinion.  Take some time and make it a memorable experience for your family if you choose to make your own Jesse tree.

Christmas fun!

Today has been a full day of Christmas fun for our family! This morning we got up and out of the house by about 8:30. Gramma was here with us too so that added to the fun!

We first went to a community market. One of the vendors works with JMP and I wanted to buy a few of his birdhouse gourds for Christmas gifts.

Our second stop was the library to make a gingerbread house. It was such a wonderful experience for all of us. It made me thankful for the library and the various programs they offer besides books! The room was set up with rows of tables and chairs. Each table had two gingerbread houses. In the middle of the room were tables set up with all kinds of yummy decorations. Each participant was asked to bring a contribution of a specific candy. We brought gummy bears. They had everything you could think of--peppermints, candy canes, marshmallows, red hots, M & M's, graham crackers (which make excellent windows), spice drops, Hershey Kisses, pretzels, Mike & Ike's, coconut, powdered sugar, gummy bears, Teddy Grahams and Goldfish (to sit on top of the roof) to name a few. We filled a plate with a variety of candy and got to work. When we finished, we walked around to look at the other designs. It surprised me to find several Mom's who were doing all the work and not letting their kids have a part! It wasn't that the kids didn't want to help; when they'd try to put something on they were told no! It was odd to me! Oh well! For the most part the families were all participating together. I saw one large family with 4 or 5 kids a wide range of ages, and they were all working together on their house. Here is a picture of our beautiful gingerbread house! This was before it was totally finished. You can see the marshmallow snowman at the front and the Twizzler door. The back side has a graham cracker window.

Next stop was the railroad museum which was having family day. Daddy and Caleb climbed aboard an engine and caboose and also rode on the hand cars. Daddy's arms were quite tired after that! We also all got to go for a ride on an old fire engine.

This evening we went to a Christmas parade. We are from a small town so it was a short thing. It was fun though. In the years we've lived here we've never been to it so it was good to be here and be able to go for a change.

JMP and Caleb planned to put our lights on the house. JMP put the clips on the roof while Caleb was napping this afternoon and started stringing the lights. When Caleb got up they went out to do the others and we have two strands of lights that are mostly out! Several times last year the wind was so strong it blew them off the house so we guess they broke then. It's weird that I don't remember them being broken because I probably would have looked for them on sale after Christmas last year.

Tomorrow we have a party/lunch after church with the kids' group so the fun will continue!

Crossing things off the to do list

It feels nice to accomplish several things and that is how I'm feeling. I'm pleased with the progress I've made on a couple projects I brought along with me on the trip. I've worked on cropping pictures for Caleb's scrapbook. I am a year behind on the pages. I brought pictures from Nov. 2006--Feb. 2007. They are cropped and ready to go in the book now! I know it will go so much faster to have this step already complete. I've also worked on a Christmas calendar project. Now I just need to add the pictures to it. I've had lots of reading time as well and worked on an embroidery project that I brought along. I saw it in the closet and thought I should get it out and work on it again.

I keep thinking of things I will be working on in the coming weeks in preparation for Christmas. I love this time of year and all the fun activities that go along with it. It makes me sad for people to dread this time of year as many do. I think too often we get bogged down in doing all these "things" that we hurry too much and don't enjoy the work as we go. That's what I'm going to try to do this year....enjoy it and make lots of fun memories and traditions with Caleb along the way.

I received this quote today in an email and wanted to share it as my parting thought today. It goes along with what I read in a book. I've found it is way too easy to compare myself with others in many areas, and I liked this reminder today. I don't have to always be striving to be better than someone else. I need to be myself, use the talents I've been given, and always strive to do my best (not someone else's best).

Things to do this week

We are having a nice week catching up at home. JMP was so nice to help get the laundry done and put up so I didn't have to do that all day on Monday. Today was our "Walmart day." Since we were gone last week and have a birthday party this weekend, our buggy was much fuller than usual. This evening the boys played outside and also some games inside when they got too hot. I got to finish up an online continuing ed. class. Wednesday we're going to the food pantry, library, and lunch with a friend. I have some things to get ready for the birthday party too.

Today I have some prayer requests to share as well.

Our paper had a story today about a local five year old girl killed riding an ATV with her grandmother.

Another 9 year old girl (granddaughter of a friend) is at Cook's hospital with injuries from a bicycle accident. Pray for her recovery and the family as they are in the middle of a move now too.

A sweet lady from our church had a stroke.
