I finished this book last week but haven't posted about it yet. It is called A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller. I found this book at the library book sale in September.
Each chapter focuses on a different phrase from the 23rd Psalm. The author uses his experiences as a shepherd to first talk about how the phrase relates to sheep and then goes on to describe how it fits us as Christians.
I never really understood the full role of the shepherd. He has to diligently watch his flock and each member of the flock. He must watch for enemies that want to come in and attack the sheep. He knows those are sneaky and he has to give careful attention that they do not get in and disturb the flock. He must watch out for diseases among his flock. He knows how quickly disease can spread through the flock so he must take precautions against disease. Then if something does get in he has to take action to keep it from spreading. He must watch out for what is growing in the ground where his sheep are grazing. His sheep would become ill if they eat certain plants. He must lead his sheep to the place where they will find plenty of food. He even leads them through the valleys to take them up to the mountain tableland feast. He has to be prepared all year long to make sure his flock has enough to eat. He must watch and make sure none of the sheep are lost or lose their way.
This book really showed me just how much care the Lord has for me as my Shepherd. He is constantly watching me, seeking my best, and providing for my needs.
I appreciated how the author tied everything together, showing how we need our Shepherd and He has our best in mind at all times. I would definitely recommend this book. This is such a familiar Psalm. I think sometimes we just read over it and think to ourselves we already know what it says so we don't stop and really consider what David is writing and trying to tell us. I learned so much about this Psalm and it is one I will want to reread sometime as a reminder.
I'll leave you today with Psalm 23:
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

What a beautiful portrait of the Shepherd. My hubby once told me that a shepherd, a good one, will even break a sheep's leg if He has to in order to keep him from going off and hurting himself.
This book sounds awesome, and I agree with you, I think the familiarity sometimes leans toward not allowing it to soak in deep.
I was blessed by this post, Bethany. Blessings to you, this evening!
Thanks for this reminder that we are the sheep and HE is the shepherd. This is a great post. This is probably one of the most well known scripture in the Bible.
Have a blessed Lord's Day.
