Flashback Friday

This week for Flashback Friday we are talking about poetry because it is National Poetry Month. My flashback:

I remember poetry units in elementary school. One year we had to make a poetry book. It had to have a certain number of different types of poems with illustrations we drew. These were poems we just copied, not wrote ourselves. I remember other times when we learned about different types of poems and then had to write our own on special lined paper.

I had several poetry books as a child. The ones I remember are Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein and The New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky.

The poem I remember memorizing is called If by Rudyard Kipling. Every senior at my high school memorized this poem in "Mrs. H's" senior English. When I looked it up, I realized I still remember most of it today. I shared it on my blog previously.

I don't read poetry much now.

Have a day of blessings!

I love poetry also. My favorites in school were Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. Back then, we memorized many of the Psalms in public school! Have a great weekend.

My kids and I have enjoyed Jack Prelutsky together.

If is a wonderful poem, and I still see it on graduation cards.

Thanks for sharing your poetry memories and for stopping by my blog. Isn't it neat how we still remember poems learned in our younger years? God bless you.

I love Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky. They were always hits in my classroom and I do many of those poems as dramatic readings. I just might have to do some for my blog!

Hi Bethany ~~ This is nicely written and very interesting. It brings memories of some things I didn't write about.

I don't read too much poetry either but I always have one poetry book checked out from the library (Ted Kooser right now). I will read a poem hit and miss now and then.

I have checked out "The New Kid on the Block" but haven't read it. It is back to the library again now.

Our younger daughter had "Where the Sidewalk Ends' and 'A Light in the Attic." They are still on her old night stand by the bed in the guest room. We read "If" but didn't memorize it. We all memorized "A Tree."

BTW, thank you very much for checking in on my poetry blog. I haven't written anything yet for this week.

Forgot to tell you last night about getting he paragraps done with the Old Blogger.

Until fixed I am using the indention HTML command at the beginning of each paragraph. That would be dd>, beggining of course with a "<". Blogger will close the command itself.
