Can I ask for a balloon?

Can I ask her for a balloon? My son often asks me this when we visit one of our local pizza restaurants.

On a previous visit to this restaurant I heard the familiar question, "Can I ask for a balloon?" Turning to look I was surprised that an employee was not next to the helium tank filling balloons. I thought seeing balloons had prompted his question. I didn't really know if they'd give my son a balloon since they weren't blowing any up at the time. He asked again though and I agreed he could ask, reminding him that they might not since they aren't blowing any up that day, hoping he wouldn't be disappointed if they said no.

I watch as he confidently approaches the girl behind the desk. She leans down to hear his request and asks him his favorite color. He comes back to our table smiling with a green balloon in hand.

Do we ever approach God this way? Do we confidently go to him in prayer to meet a need as my son did with his desire for a balloon? Do we boldly ask, even if the answer isn't really what we want to hear? Or do we hold back, not wanting to bother or interrupt Him like I felt about his asking for one? How many times do we miss out on a blessing because we do not ask Him at all or we don't ask believing He will answer? We are told by Jesus in Matthew 7 to ask and seek. He has good things for us and we need to not be afraid to ask confidently.

~~~~~~~
"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:9-11
Excellent! Great illustration and clear words for leading into this Scripture. Thank you. I needed this reminder.
Bethany,
What touched me most about this post was the fact they weren't blowing up the balloons and so many times we give up on going to God when it doesn't appear He is standing around giving us our way. Loved this illustration, my friend. Great job.
Blessings to you today!
Wow.. you got me on this one. I always want to approach God with confidence and that is even something I am seeking to do more of this year. It's so, so easy though to fall into old habits and approach timidly or shyly feeling that I am "bothering" God.
Great post with an even better reminder!
