The first one is called Skunkdog by Emily Jenkins. Dumpling is an obedient dog who does everything she is told. She doesn’t, however, have a sense of smell. She moves to the country with “her people” where she meets a friend skunk. “Her people” do not want her to be friends with the skunk but since she has no sense of smell, the skunk doesn’t bother her. Caleb laughed through this one. I felt it taught a good lesson too about acceptance.
Another book I read for this set of reviews is The Searcher and Old Tree by David McPhail. This is the story of a raccoon who searches for food at night. Then as dawn comes he goes back to his home, a strong tree. The tree keeps him safe through the day as he sleeps through a storm before he goes out again the next night.
Stormy's Hat Just Right for a Railroad Man by Eric A. Kimmel was a book Caleb and I both enjoyed. Stormy is a railroad man looking for a hat. Every other profession has a hat to wear, but he cannot find a hat that is right for his job as a railroad man. The hats he tries blow off his head, make him too hot, or give him a headache. At first he won’t listen to his wife’s suggestion. Then he tells her the type of hat he needs, which she draws and then makes for him.
Another book about a dog! Carl's Summer Vacation by Alexandra Day is an enjoyable book with beautiful illustrations. A little girl and her dog Carl have an adventure when they are supposed to be napping. They take a ride in a canoe and tip over, visit a park where people are playing baseball, help themselves to a family’s picnic, and then head home just as Mom comes to wake them up.
I enjoy doing these reviews and seeing what new books are out there in children's literature.

Thanks for these reviews. I'm looking for 4 really captivating books for my granddaughters in Africa. My plan is to record me reading the book to them on a CD so they can read along. I'm also going to have it videoed so I can turn the book around, show them the pages and 'interact' with them.
Do you have any suggestions?
