In my goals for 2008 I included that I wanted to read a genre that I normally don't read. Well I chose this autobiography to fit that category! I absolutely loved this book. It makes me want to read more autobiographies too. Actually I started reading this book when we were in San Antonio a few weeks ago. I got through the first chapter and didn't really feel like I connected with it. It wasn't what I had expected I guess. I picked it back up this week though and read the rest really quickly.
Eat Mor Chikin Inspire More People is the autobiography of Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. I chose this book because when we visited our local Chick-fil-A I saw Mr. Cathy's picture on a sign outside the door. I love the food and service and thought the book would be a good way to find out more about the company.
I don't know about you, but I've always had good experiences at Chick-fil-A. I can remember distinct things that have happened to me on multiple visits to various Chick-fil-A establishments. I don't recall anything about my last visit to any other fast food place. Do you? For example, I remember the enthusiasm of the man behind the counter serving us in Abilene. He made a connection, asked Caleb his name, and then asked if he knew his name was found in the Bible. As we ate I noticed he treated each customer with genuine joy. At our local Chick-fil-A, there is a lady who works in the dining room. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to help out with anything you need. When I go there I count on seeing this lady. I need to find out her name. Chick-fil-A service stands out in my mind. The food is great too, but the service always seems to be a step above any other fast food restaurants.
Reading this book I realized that this excellent service is a philosophy for the company founder. I could tell that he is one who strives to live his life with excellence. He wrote many stories about the foster children they've mentored through the years and the differences that have been made because the children learned someone cared. I was inspired by this book with the constant stories of little things making a difference. It came across to me that you never know who is watching or how your words might impact someone. It was nice to read about a company that really seems to care for the employees and customers. I admire Mr. Cathy's choice to remain closed on Sundays for worship and family time.
Okay, so now I have to ask: do you have any good Chick-fil-A stories? Surely I'm not the only one with great experiences.

I went to Chick-fil-A for breakfast this morning :) My mom and I meet there for lunch sometimes to let my girls play with my nephews. Every time we have met, there is a sweet lady walking around handing out coupons and samples of something. I don't remember the last time we paid full price there!
All I have to say is...Cookies n Cream Milkshake!
Oh yes, I totally agree about the Cookies N Cream milkshake!!
Boo Hoo... No, Chick-fil-A here in Portland, Oregon. Rare chance I get to visit one when I'm in Maryland...
