Friday Favorites: Hymn #1

I copied my idea for Friday Favorites from fellow blogger Kathy. She does various favorite blogs on Fridays. I have been doing songs I like the past few weeks on Fridays. I decided I would begin Friday Favorites, and I will have a different theme each month. I think I can pick a different music/song related theme for each month. For the month of January I will be talking about four of my favorite hymns.

One of my favorite hymns is Amazing Grace. I found a page with both the lyrics as well as a link at the top to hear an instrumental version of the song. It is nice to hear playing in the background I think. It was written by John Newton. You can read more about him here or at Wikipedia. I enjoyed reading this information about the writer of this song. There are now many versions of this song and a movie by the same title. I have not seen it though.

This is on my favorites because of the meaning of the words. Really where would we be without God's grace? We are all sinners, blind and in darkness. Thankfully because of Jesus, we don't have to stay that way. I like the verse that talks about the safety we have in His grace. He will lead us, if we let Him. We can always hold on to that grace. It is amazing to think about this song, how many years ago it was written yet, and how well-loved it is today.

Thank you, God, for your grace.

"From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." John 1: 16, 17
(I used verse 16 recently but it fits today with grace too!)

I love this idea for your Friday Favorites! I look forward to reading about all your favorite hymns. I love Amazing Grace also and it is one that I included on the CD I made for my mom. In fact, I put it last on the CD because it's such a great song. For the first verse, I played it on harpsichord and then played the melody on another track using a woodwind instrument. Then on the second verse I went into full orchestration and after that transitioned into Victory in Jesus, then put a tag on the end with the last line of Amazing Grace. I loved it! Sorry for all the details!
